Yes our passports were collected by the tour guide in the van just before sending us to the restaurant nearby for lunch. The passports are then placed in a small pouch and passed to a small immigration office / booth near the jetty. After the crossing into Laos, the passports were returned with a small slip of paper stamped as proof of entry into Laos.

Not if you are doing the boat trip to Laos. You technically cross borders but you are just on an island and it's very touristy. We went to the Myanmar border but did not cross on my tour.
Sounds pretty forgettable and am wondering why so many make the trip.
