From my recollection, there wasn't a guided tour, but there was a good deal of volunteers throughout the house that would be able to give more details about certain items and rooms.
how far from pier is the Palace? Hoping it is within walking distance.

It is very close, certainly less than a half mile and probably less. We stayed a little south of Hulihee palace and walked to the pier many times. Lots of stores and restaurants on the way.
