The man who attacked the CDC headquarters in Atlanta on Friday fired more than 180 shots into the campus and broke about 150 windows.

CDC personnel said it could take "weeks or even months" to replace the damaged windows and fully clean up the site.

The gunman in the fatal attack on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took his own life after he unsuccessfully attempted to leave the building from where he opened fire, according to a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the investigation.

A union representing workers at the CDC said the incident was not random and “compounds months of mistreatment, neglect, and vilification that CDC staff have endured.”

The U.S. CDC has tightened security following an attack Friday on its Atlanta headquarters that left a police officer and the gunman dead, including having most employees work from home this week and removing vehicle decals showing where they work.

Public health experts are calling on HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to more strongly condemn misinformation, disinformation, and violence in the wake of the shooting at the CDC campus on Friday. Kennedy sent an email about the shooting to all CDC employees just before 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. That email was shared with MedPage Today.

In a large and hastily arranged Zoom call on Saturday, about 800 rattled staffers with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tried to make sense of the trauma they endured a day earlier, when a gunman across the street from the CDC campus opened fire on the agency’s buildings.
