The runaway success of “Ne Zha 2” is another sign that Chinese audiences are choosing domestic movies over Hollywood blockbusters.

The Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 has made history by becoming the highest-grossing film in China, surpassing previous box office records.

Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan has further revised its forecast for "Ne Zha 2," projecting the animated blockbuster will reach 14.25 billion yuan (about 1.99 billion U.S. dollars) in total earnings in China.

Chinese animated film "Nezha 2" became the country's highest-grossing film on Thursday, taking more than 5.8 billion yuan ($796.32 million), after drawing large audiences during the recent Lunar New Year holiday.

The film tech company rode the China Lunar New Year ticket sales hitting its own record high of $1.3 billion on the strength of local releases like 'Ne Zha 2.'
