California Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Monday that the state would not back down from its redistricting fight and pledged to “fight fire with fire” if Texas tried to redraw its congressional district maps.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Monday that he would only move forward with an effort to redraw California’s congressional districts if Texas is successful in redrawing its own to eke out another five Republican seats in the 2026 midterms.

The Democratic governor, during an Aug. 4 press conference, vowed to push forward with mid-cycle redistricting should Texas Republicans continue with their plan to redraw congressional district lines to help President Donald Trump ‘s quest to add more Republicans to the House.
