Clinical trials have shown that six-monthly injections of lenacapavir are almost 100 percent protective against becoming infected with HIV. But big questions remain over the drug’s affordability.

National Aids Commission (NAC) and health campaigners have welcomed the approval of a twice-a-year HIV prevention injection with calls for the medicine to be affordable to ensure wider access. World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday announced the approval of lenacapavir as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV.

A drug currently used to treat certain HIV infections has also, on Wednesday, received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to be used to prevent HIV.
