Several key conservatives on the Supreme Court left open the possibility on Wednesday that they could side with Planned Parenthood in a dispute with South Carolina over its decision to yank that organization’s Medicaid funding because it provides abortions.

The Supreme Court appeared divided Wednesday over whether states should be able cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood, a case that comes amid a wider push from abortion opponents to defund the nation’s leading abortion provider.

The court will decide whether Medicaid beneficiaries may sue to receive services under a law that lets them choose any qualified provider.

Reproductive health provider Planned Parenthood said on Monday the Trump administration would cut federal family planning funding as of Tuesday, affecting birth control, cancer screenings and other services for low-income people.

The Trump administration has paused some family planning grants as it investigates whether the providers are following federal laws.
