Butler is the casualty of a crowded backcourt. The Sixers drafted VJ Edgecombe Wednesday, and Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain under contract for next season.

Butler, 24, was acquired alongside four second-round picks at the trade deadline, with the Sixers sending Reggie Jackson and a first-round pick to the Washington Wizards. Butler was quickly converted from his two-way contract to a standard deal, and finished the season with the Sixers as a calming presence at point guard.

“He has a team option for $2.35 million, and the Sixers are desperate for inexpensive back-end-rotation talent, but there’s a scenario where Philly declines the option and re-signs him to a longer deal as a non-Bird free agent,” Hollinger wrote.
