Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was sworn in as South Korea’s next president on Wednesday following a dramatic snap election six months after the country’s previous leader declared martial law and plunged the nation into chaos.

Both Lee and conservative Kim pledged change for a country deeply scarred by a shock martial law briefly imposed by former leader Yoon Suk Yeol.

South Koreans will head to the polls on Tuesday in a snap presidential election following the removal from office of previous leader Yoon Suk-yeol, who was ousted over his brief but disastrous declaration of martial law in December.
