The lawsuit marks the latest salvo in the nationwide redistricting battle ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The five now-vulnerable Republican districts are currently represented by Reps. Ken Calvert, Doug LaMalfa, Kevin Kiley, David Valadao and Darrell Issa. Issa's Southern California district was the final seat Mitchell and his team were able to put together.
The aggressive gerrymander could help Democrats flip as many as five House seats next year. While that could neutralize new maps in Texas, Republicans are redrawing more district lines elsewhere.
