Electoral watchdogs at the Organization of American States have expressed concern over the low turnout in Mexico’s historic and contentious judicial elections.

Nearly 90 percent of voters did not cast ballots on Sunday, one of the lowest turnouts in any federal election since Mexico became a democracy.

Mexico is about to become the only country in the world where every judge in every court, including the Supreme Court, will be elected by popular vote. The reform aims to fight corruption and restore trust in the justice system.
