252 mph wind gust recorded in Hurricane Melissa breaks records

ATLANTA — Hurricane Melissa shattered records as it approached Jamaica last month. A dropsonde weather instrument from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter Aircraft measured a 252 mph wind gust before reaching the ocean surface. This is the highest ever wind gust recorded by a dropsonde in a hurricane.
