On February 23 at around 12:28 a.m., officers went to investigate a shot spotter alert at the 600 block of Poplar Grove Street. Once there, police located the victim with a gunshot wound to the head.

Poplar Grove Plantation is part of the National Park Service's Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which runs from Wilmington in the north to Jacksonville, Florida, in the south.
