Protesters converged in downtown Los Angeles for the fourth straight day of anti-ICE demonstrations on Monday, hours after hundreds of National Guard troops arrived in the area after President Trump ordered their deployment following days of violent clashes.

4:47 p.m. EDT The Trump administration asked the judge to reject Newsom’s request and allow it to respond by Wednesday, calling Newsom’s attempt to block the deployment of federal troops “legally meritless” and saying it would jeopardize the safety of Homeland Security personnel and interfere with the government’s ability to carry out operations.

The National Guard was deployed to Los Angeles County as anti-ICE protests continued to escalate Saturday afternoon and into the evening. The unrest is centered in the city of Paramount, California, where protesters clashed with federal authorities,

President Trump said Tuesday the deployed National Guard members will leave Los Angeles “when there’s no danger.”

The Trump administration said it would send 2,000 National Guard troops into Los Angeles after a second day in which protesters confronted immigration agents during raids of local businesses.

Protesters are demonstrating for a fourth night against ICE arrests of undocumented immigrants. Meanwhile, the showdown between President Trump and Gov. Gavin Newsom could soon move into a federal courtroom.

Tom Homan, the head of ICE, confirmed to NBC News that he would arrest Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass if they interfered with immigration raids.
