NATO leaders backed a big increase in defence spending and restated their commitment to defend each other from attack after a brief summit tailor-made for U.S. President Donald Trump.

There were unexpected moments of levity among the momentous decisions on raising spending to levels not seen since the Cold War.

NATO’s summit in the Netherlands has been described as “transformational” and “historic.” The 32 members of the world’s biggest security organization endorsed a plan to massively ramp up defense spending.
