An attempt to override Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden's first veto failed Thursday in the South Dakota House of Representatives.

South Dakota child care providers say they’re “heartbroken” over Governor Larry Rhoden’s veto of a bill intended to address the child care crisis in the state. An effort to override the governor’s veto fell short in the House Thursday.

South Dakota House members failed to override Gov. Larry Rhoden’s veto of a childcare assistance bill Thursday (March 13, 2025), with the vote falling short of the required two-thirds majority. The voted was 27-43 against the override of House Bill 1132.
