MONROE, La. (KNOE) - On August 15, 1945, the world celebrated victory over Japan and the end of World War II after two atomic bombs were dropped on its cities. Japan surrendered on August 14, but the celebrations were worldwide the next day.
Part of the Axis powers alongside Germany and Italy, Japan officially surrendered on August 15, 1945, just months after VE Day in May 1945. While those celebrations marked the end of the war in Europe, many thousands of armed forces personnel were still fighting and dying in the far east right up until Japan's surrender.
