President Donald Trump says he's directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the notorious former prison on a California island that's been closed for more than 60 years.

The facility on Alcatraz Island has been a tourist attraction under the National Parks Service for longer than it operated as a federal prison.

President Trump said on May 4 he wants to reopen the infamous Alcatraz prison. It closed in 1963 because it was too expensive to operate.

Alcatraz Island hasn't been used as a federal penitentiary since 1963. It had a capacity of roughly 300 people.
