The high-profile Democratic governors of Illinois, Minnesota and New York defended their states' immigration policies in a Republican-led House Oversight Committee on Thursday -- weighing in on the ongoing Los Angeles protests over immigration enforcement.

While many demonstrations against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have been peaceful, with marchers chanting slogans and carrying signs, others have led to clashes with police who have sometimes used chemical irritants to disperse crowds. Hundreds have been arrested.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is suing Trump in an attempt to block the deployment of federal troops in the city, which Newsom has called a “serious breach of state sovereignty.”

Military-style vehicles and National Guards troops have blocked a portion of 4th Street in front of the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse.

About 500 of the National Guard troops deployed to the Los Angeles protests have been trained to accompany agents on immigration operations, the commander in charge said Wednesday.

Monday's protests were largely calmer than Sunday's clashes. California officials insist that the 4,000 National Guards troops and 700 active duty Marines en route to L.A. are an unnecessary abuse of power by Trump.
