Leo De Gar Kulka (February 17, 1921 – March 17, 1998) was a Czech -born American record producer, recording engineer and educator. Starting in Los Angeles at Autumn Records in the 1960s, he later founded the San Francisco studio Golden State Recorders, trade school College for Recording Arts and audiophile record label Sonic Arts.

Dec 31, 2014 · I was fortunate enough to have worked at this studio 25 years ago. The studio was actually called, Golden State Recorders (GSR). Located at 665 Harrison Street, San Francisco, CA. It was built in 1964 by Leo Kulka. This was the first recording studio in town and was large enough for an orchestra.

In one day at Golden State, they recorded six songs— four originals, one traditional, and a cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain”—none of which were ever released until a box set 30 years later.

Golden State Recorders used the Golden State Records label for acts that did not have a deal with another company. The music can range from soul to hard rock to gospel, but Custer & the Survivers, Zorba & the Greeks and the Poor Souls all have good garage sounds.
